I am having a busy and wonderful March in 2019!
March 2-3, I'm the guest writer and preacher at Trinity Presbyterian Church in downtown Tucson. I'm leading a few workshops on my books, and hopefully doing a presentation with illustrator Guy Porfirio, who illustrated my beloved book, Papa's Gift in 2002. I have a new book coming out with Flyaway Books this fall, The Worst Christmas Ever, which is illustrated by Guy. For 17 years, we've wanted to collaborate on another picture book and finally, we are. My time in Tucson is planned around the fabulous Tucson Festival of Books (www.tucsonfestivalofbooks.org). I hope to see those of you who are in the Tucson area while I am in town.
The end of March brings me closer to home, in Los Angeles. March 25-26, I'm a workshop leader and guest writer for a conference entitled Publishing in Color: A Writing Conference for Under-Represented Groups. This conference is held on the campus of the University of Southern California, LA. My workshop, "Where Do I Begin? An A to Z Guide to Publishing Children's Books," provides the basic in all genres of children's literature.
That same week, on March 28-29, I'm leading a workshop at the Writing for Your Life Spiritual Writers' Conference, also held on the campus of USC. My workshop, "From Alpha to Omega, or What You Need to Know to Write and Publish a Picture Book for Children," is geared for writers interested in learning how to write and publish picture books. Barbara Brown Taylor, one of my favorite writers, is the keynote speaker for the event.
In February, I had the joy of leading a women's retreat for the First Presbyterian Church in Ft. Worth TX. They asked me to do this 11/2 years ago, and to teach from my book, Finding Calm in the Chaos. Ninety wonderful Presbyterian women attended and welcomed me so warmly and enthusiastically! I instantly felt as thought I was among friends. It was a true gift for me to share the leadership with amazing and gifted women, and to have such a receptive crowd.
I also taught two classes from the book, 99 Ways to Raise Spiritually Healthy Children. The attendees included church member and parents of those whose children are enrolled in the church's preschool. I even got to hold a baby and read one of my board books to a three year old. Doesn't get any better than that!
All in all, a perfect few days, and I hope to have the opportunity to do this with another church one day.
